Downtown has tons of hotels. All the major chains are
located there and there are a number of smaller hotels all
over downtown. Downtown of course has the nightlife, and if
the reason for your visit is business or a convention, then
downtown is probably the place you want to be.
Mission Valley and Old Town is another area with a
concentration of hotels. Some smaller conventions are held
in a couple of the larger facilities there as well. The room
prices tend to be a little lower than downtown and the
beaches. If you plan to do a lot of driving anyway then
Mission Valley and Old Town might work for you.
Once you've decided where to stay making a reservation is
easy. With any of the national chains, you can call their
800 numbers. Most of the aggregators, such as Orbitz and
Priceline also can give you deals at many of the hotels. But
understand many of the hotels in San Diego, especially at
the beaches, are small and not part of a chain and don't
deal with the aggregators. You'll want to call them direct.

deal. Just remember that during the summer months and major
conventions, such as Comic-Con, the hotels are going to be
packed. Calling the hotel directly might be the only way you
can get a room.
